one city, two shores
Landerneau marks the boundary between Cornouaille and the Pays du Léon.
the charm of the river
It is crossed by the Élorn river, which flows a few kilometers further into the Brest harbor.
art in all its forms
An artistic town, it boasts 2 contemporary art exhibition venues.
Taking advantage of a mid-week day off, I hopped on the train for Landerneau. Originally, I simply wanted to see the latest FHEL exhibition. In the end, I discovered a warm-hearted town, a mix of cultural hustle and bustle and a gentle riverside lifestyle. I'd like to tell you about a day out in Landerneau, away from the hectic routine of the week, with no timetables or constraints.
Stroll on the heritage circuit
Discover Landerneau's heritage
I arrived early at Landerneau station and have a little time to spare for my visit to the FHEL. After a cup of coffee on the terrace, watching the town come alive, I decide to follow the town's historical heritage circuit. It's easy when you don't really have a sense of direction: just follow the blue line on the ground!
This heritage itinerary invites you to explore the city through its narrow streets: the Saint-Thomas district and its Rohan gallery, a center for contemporary art, rue Lafayette and its artists' studiosYou'll also find the banks of the River Élorn and the famous inhabited bridge, all the way to Place de l'Église. The soul of the city is perceptible right down to the old shipowners' houses, and it's easy to imagine the hustle and bustle that reigned daily around the port a few centuries ago.
Did you know?
Landerneau was once a port of international renown. The region was renowned for growing and weaving flax, which was exported from the ports of Brest, Morlaix and Landerneau all over Europe.
Visit the FHEL in Landerneau
It's time for me to join the Fonds Hélène et Édouard Leclerc pour la culture. Created in 2012 by the Leclerc family, this contemporary art center hosts a major international exhibition every year. The founders' ambition: to make contemporary art accessible to all, thanks to a strong mediation program. The center is housed in the former Capuchin convent, which has been magnificently restored but still retains all its soul.
Lunch break in a crêperie
1 p.m. I'm feeling a bit peckish. And my favorite food is crêpes! The weather's fine and I want to enjoy a pretty view of the river, so I sit down on the terrace beside the Élorn. I order a "kraz" buckwheat pancake, with lots of butter, just the way I like them. The harbor of Brest is not far away, and the scent of iodized air tickles my nostrils.

Cycling around the city
